Holes on the hedge

View attachment 421494 My hedge would not stop cats, badgers, or dogs, a substantial hedge, but would not stop wild life.

Wild life is ok passing into the garden, and do whatever they can for their living. But we want to block cats or dogs coming into our garden, because they belong to someone else, and they also mess the garden and grass.

My cats can climb to the highest branch of the apple tree, so can't see any hedge stopping them, we have stopped feeding birds, as in essence that is bating a trap, so cats can catch them, with would not be so bad, except cats bring them into the house and release them.

We don't see any wild life around here apart from some seagulls and mag pies. Cats in this area seem not able to climb privet hedges over 6ft tall, but they sneak through the holes in the bottom of the hedge. They are not welcome into the garden due to their making mess on the grass. The mess they make on the grass and around the garden are serious health hazards to children playing in the garden.

Privet should grow and fill the holes eventually, or plant some in the gap

Years ago i was getting bothered by dogs wandering through a gap in the wall i'd made to have easier access to the fields beyond. So, reluctantly, i decided to plant a line of dogwood to keep them out. A heap of dead tree branches sufficed to maintain an effective barrier til the hedge grew thick enough to do the job but now it keeps sheep out instead of dogs since the farmer changed from keeping cattle.

A mix of red and green looks good in the morning sun, too, and brings a splash of colour over winter. I'm not a fan of box hedges or those blighted privets that festoon the 'burbs. Still no hedgehogs in this neck of the woods. Too many dry walls and new fences with gravel boards blocking their path.
