    behind the original programmer the live from the fuse spur goes to the programmer but then the live to the bolier joins into the three neutrals this seems odd to me

    Trying to follow I see no blue wire or brown wire.
    L = red
    N = Black
    3 = Red + Black NO = 4 on hive.
    4 = Not used
    5 = Live not required on hive.
    6 = Red NO = 3 on hive.
    7 = Yellow NC = 1 on hive.
    8 = Live not required on hive.
    There are two live wires and two wires to number 3/4 NO heating. And you will not have removed wiring to original thermostat so you will need to turn original thermostat full on. Or short out wires.

    There is likely a junction box which connects the motorised valve/s to the system, using the cable colours of the valves, some times you can work out which are the wires to thermostat and bridge them.
