Afternoon, Just removed the above receiver to decorate. Noticed that the earth wire from the boiler is connected to terminal 2 (com) for some reason. Was curious as to why it is not connected to the earth terminal - see pictures and wiring diagram. Any information would be much
appreciated?

Because it’s being used as the switch output (on one of your photos), so the common/live in, which is bad practice as it’s more commonly used as the cpc/earth connector. It would be prudent to either renew the wiring or at least apply some brown sleeving/insulation tape if 230vac switching to indicate it’s being used as a live wire.
That's what happens when plumbers do electrical wiring......

In reality it should be 5 core flex. 1 core (Green/Yellow) for the earthwire and only the earthwire and nothing else even if you oversleeve it.

The earth wire (cpc) should be earthed even if the device does not require an earth. In this case, earth at the origin.

I know no one likes it but bear in mind it has only very recently actually been prohibited with flexible cable.

When I was working for a large manufacturing company, we bought a new large control panel from a specialist firm, all the potentiometers were wired in three core flex with the earth used as a live cable, albeit reduced voltage
Then it was/is not "the earth".
This is the same as people calling a wire "neutral" just because it is black or blue.
I must have missed this - pending my having my BBB to hand, can you tell me about this 'recent prohibition'?

The forum was correct. 544.4.2 now prohibits oversleeving of G/Y conductors in multicore cables, as well as G/Y singles. I must say that I was unaware of this, but I suppose that it is reasonably sensible.
