A few years ago, the braided flex on our plug-in electric fire was getting very frayed and you could see the blue and brown sheaths underneath, so we cut the wire shorter (beyond the fraying), and fitted a rewireable plug (the old one was fixed). Anyway, when we use the fire now, even with just one 400w bar, the plug gets quite warm. Is this normal? The plug itself was originally fitted to a television, but arent all plugs 13A rated? The Socket is a spur off a 20A radial socket circuit supplying only one room. I know this is probably not to regs, but cant see why it would make the plug warm. Any advice appreciated!

Crafty,
Could be one of many factors, check obvious such as terminals in plug are tightened properly and that plugtop fuse carrier clips are gripping the fuse tightly there can also be issues with connection between the plugs pins and the sockets receptors not making a good connection , this can happen over time with constant plugging and unplugging and the slight sideways movements each time gradually opening the receptor connectors and loosening the connection, bad connections will produce heat.

Try that plug in a different socket. Does it get warm? If not then it's the socket. As others have pointed out, there might be a loose connection or dirty contacts in there. If you have an appliance of similar wattage that works fine in other sockets try it in this one.
