Am renovating a house at the moment and the hot press and cylinder are located in the bathroom in a cupboard. Is this ok by building standards?

Also all the controls - programmer, timer etc are in the bathroom in this closet too? Is this ok?

Generally anything enclosed in a cupboard is usually deemed to be OK although you might have to lock the cupboard particularly it its within 2000 mm as below.

Any other electric switch, timeclock etc. should be at least 2000 mm from the nearest part of any wet thing, WC, bath, basin, shower. Even then its not correct by modern standards and no longer permitted unless already there. Furthermore all work in bathrooms and kitchens MUST be notified to building control by a qualified electrician who is a member of a Notification scheme like the NICEIC.

If you are significantly renovating the property the Building Control officer will probably expect you to remove any electrical items from the bathroom and rewire the whole room with the correct earth bonding.

DIY electrics are mostly no longer permissable in bathrooms, kitchens or outside.

Thanks for advice Tony.

I assume its ok to leave the plumbing where it is (is there any regulation against having the cylinder etc in the bathroom??) and put the electric controls in another room.

Will be getting a sparks to do the wiring.

The cylinder is fine in the bathroom but should be enclosed because it has electric items on it. e.g. Thermostat and electric immersion heater.

Take the advice of your electrician who MUST be a member of a Notifying scheme.

what is "the hot press"?

Thanks Kev. I should have guessed from his name (or perhaps Vladimir is not his real name?).

So an airing cupboard is called a "hot press" in Scotland. I learn something every day.
