I have a Potterton combi 80 boiler. I have just been away for a week, and left the heating on low, to keep the house warmish.

When i get back, hte heating is not working, but the hot water is working fine?

I think i have sourced the problem to the CH switch, could it be this simple or is there something else to consider? :?

If you do a search on Potterton combis I think you'll find that your problem is very common and may be caused by a small leak of hot water which stops the boiler going into heating mode.

What fault have you identified with CH switch.

It's broke.....

The manual has a fault finding guide so i followed this everything is fine apart from the voltage across the switch, this, according to the guide is the CH mode switch. I'm going to replace this first as it is cheap, but if it doesn't work, i'm going to call someone in....... any reccomendations in the southend/essex area?

When you say leak, do you mean from taps? I have checked and can't find any evidence of leaks

consider the wax capsule in the divertor valve is the boiler fires for a few seconds periodically...

combi 80 's are Puma80e's without a few parts like water pressure switch and c/h and h/w temp selectors....

3 most common faults with these boilers ive found

1. pcb
2. diverter valve sticks or loses calibration
3. flowswitch microswitch locks on !!

a simple continuity test on the switch will prove faulty or not or bridge it to test

I have a a word with a few friends of friends and the general consensus is the diverter valve....... the strange thing is, i was putting it back together ( havn't done the work yet) and thought i would ged rid of all the crap around the wires. Got the hover out, started sucking the dust up and the boiler fires up!?! Leave it for a while, the rads start getting warm!?!? Now, everything seems to be fine!!!! I think its time for a boiler service!

boiler service wont cure this problem mate !! although may help other parts and boiler life span !

have been to a few like this the divertor vlve was stuck for a few days, by the time I got back to fit part started working again.....
