Hotpoint Ultima TDC62 drier

There was a banging noise coming from the drier as it spun around.I took the top off and found that a length of plate with a brush on the end had become bent and was hitting a recess in the drum .The drum has a band which runs all the way around ,which seems to be for the brush to run on.I bent the plate back and made sure the brush runs on it .Can anyone tell me what this brush thing is for.

It picks up the signals from the drier sensors under the metal band.
