Any idea why the chimney and foundation brick is a different type to the main walls? Is this common?

Im finding it hard to put an age on the property and understand its history.

One thought was maybe the house was re-built on old foundations. But another idea was that they built it like this from new ?

Main brick is wire cut i am told?

Any idea on the age of the property from the style / brick ?

Main brick looks like LBC Rustic, below something like West Hoathly. Where in the country is it?

Probably is W/H or Freshfield Lanes then. They are both much more expensive than the Rustics.

Could it of been a case of using lower cost bricks on the walls to save a few £. And using better quality for the foundations?

Yes..

Just curious why use a different style brick for the chimney and foundations to the rest of it.

With respect the whole house looks odd - definitely a one off to the owner's specific design . In the 50's @ a guess. Or 60's and a brickie (the owner) brought back van loads of those flettons after he was on site earning a fortune on "The Lump" ;)

Maybe water / damp resistant bricks up to the damp proof course and more "atrractive" ( or less expensive bricks ) above the damp proof course

The main walls look like LBC commons (Rustic as identified above), basically a Fletton with a pressed pattern on the face. They are horrible bricks, cheap as chips and prone to spalling if they get too wet or are painted. You see them a lot on 1950's council houses. They have obviously used quality facing bricks below DPC and the chimney stack as the the commons wouldn't last 5 minutes in those locations.
