How best to render this wall

Evening,

I'm looking to smooth the neighbours garage base that is part of my garden wall but there are some areas that would need patching before I put a smoother render on and paint it.

How should I best tackle patching the deep parts? Is there the type of mortar mix I should use or type of sand?
This isn't something I've done before so please use layman's terms!
