How can I make a lighting unit?

Some shops use a similar idea, for there light box displays, they are in a box made out of mdf.

They Fit the 12 volt spotlights in it with the transformers inside the box, usually there are holes or slots in the boxes to allow the heat out.

Usually the fittings are enclosed type with only 20 watt lamps in.

On the side of the box they have fitted a 20 amp double pole switch on a suitable box.
The transformers are wired in parellel back to this switch.

From the switch is a flex suitably glanded into it to prevent it pulling out, and on the other end a plugtop with a 5amp rated fuse.

The main concern I think is the lampheat and what is above your light unit.
As you do not want to create a fire risk.
