How do I dig a deep hole?

dont be lazy and just dig a hole

I was going to, but with a hole entrance of just 2-3ft square, there isnt much room to get my arm and spade down to the bottom of the hole.

just dig it wider at the top and use plenty of concrete, if you do not use plenty of concrete the ****** will just push it over with your landrover.
its only a very small job

weve just done 18 of them 400mm square 900mm deep. used a hired hole borer to break the worst down and then the double spades to clear the spoil. very easy, more than enough room to get it out

Cheers Thermo, I guess a hole borer is the answer. And perhaps a wider hole as merlin says.

I'd look into seeing if there are any service plans available that tells you where they run and how deep..

I recently had to dig a lot of holes for posts through clays and bricks, i used hammers and crow bar, leaver the earth, then scoop out with hand, cleared them in not time and you can see if any utilities are about

Ive obtained drawings of the location of my gas & electric pipes, which fortunately are not in the way (if the drawings are acurate).

But ive had a change of mind today. Decided im going to do it by hand. Dont want to risk the hole borer machine ripping up any service pipes/cables.

Perhaps if I do it left handed, then my left forearm will grow to be as big as my right forearm

We had one in our drive and i was away with work, the missus decided to take my car out of the garage and as she was reversing her friend was guiding her out, when my missus all of sudden was not going anywhere, when she said "what's wrong the car will not go" her friend replied - "i don't know, but this post thing is not going down, think it's broke"

I arrived home and the next day went in the garage, to see a perfect rectangle mark on the back bumper, i clicked straight away (it was an old XR2i) so i did not care. I never said a word, waiting for her to confess and 3 weeks later she did LoL

Well I dug my hole today by hand. Did the first 60cm with a post spade.

A neighbour kindly lent me a breaker bar (about 5ft long with a chisel shaped end) which I used for the rest of the digging. It was a god send.

Scooped out the muck with a small hand shovel.

Only took about 2hrs and saved me £50 that the petrol hole borer would have cost to rent.

And my street still has electricity & gas
