What is the best way to install a sunken mat by the front door in the hall, i.e. one that you can left out and clean the recess?

Do you need to do anything in particular to protect the surrounding floor from damp, for example snow getting in there and puddling?

Do I just edge the floor around the opening with similar stuff to what you use at a threshold that would allow for the 22mm drop from oak floor to ply floor underneath?

The floor I will be using is about 22mm thick engineered oak.

I used a Mat Well/Recess made by Quickstep. Pre built aluminium frame and good quality rubber backed mat.

has been down 6 or so years and still looks as new, not see any water ingress when the mat has been out for cleaning.
