how do i know if a wall is a support wall?

i am thinking of knocking down 2 walls in my living room to open up the space. one of them must be a support wall but not sure which one. any help? also any cheap ideas on how to get round this once the wall has been knocked down? thanks

You could knock it down and see if the roof collapses perhaps? That would be a clear indication.

As above, plus:

I am doing a similar thing. I got a couple of quotes to get an idea of cost and some details about what needed doing. Both builders told me to chop into the ceiling a bit to check joist direction. Personally, I've had no joy from my building regs department regarding visiting me to give me advice until the work is done. You'll need a structural engineer to calculate the beam sizes required for the area(s) needing support - you can tap him for advice while he's with you.
