How do I - Match that old fashioned stain look/colour

I am doing up an old cottage and I REALLY want to try and blend the new woodwork in to match the old stuff that we have retained.

Looking at the wood, it seems to be mainly Scotch Pine with an amber "ish" stain, and then perhaps a slightly browner varnish or similar (shellac?) over the top?

Anybody trodden this path before and got any tips?

Trial and error really, plus recoat existing as well.
Try pine [very orange] antique pine or light oak to start.

That shellac is almost certainly polyurethane varnish, and by the looks of that picture thats a mahogany colorant on there, put on with a yard broom by the looks of it

best thing to do is if you have some old removed wood from around your project turn it over(non treated side), sand it back good and hard and experiment with different shades of stain-varnish until you come up with something close (almost impossible) good luck with that, no easy solution though, or maybe someone else knows better??
