A simple job - changing a tap washer on a standard tap.

However I cannot remove the handle. I've removed the screw in the side but it will not budge. I was thinking of heating the handle with a blow torch but I don't want to melt the plastic insert in the top of the handle.

Help!

Jam a piece of wood under the handle in the fully open position, and close the tap.

If this doesn't work, post a picture of the tap.

Try:

Pour boiling water all over it to get it hot
Loosen the screw in the centre 2-3 turns (you have FOUND the screw in the centre?? :D )
Push up on the plastic part with wood or whatever you can
Tap the loosened screw head down with a SMALL hammer

The screw was in the side, Chris. Like on cross-handled taps. It might even be a cross-handled tap. We may never know.

The screw was in the side. Will there be another screw in the top under the plastic?

The tap is in my summer chalet so cannot have a look until Weds.

I've tried hitting it upwards with a BIG hammer.

Will try the trick with a piece of wood and hot water

Thanks
