Thanks. I suspect it hasn't been working for many years, so maybe the external battery will be in the same condition as everything else in the house, ie not working 
How do I remove the bits of the old alarm?

Well, that was a giggle… took the top off, 2 fuses on the circuit board… took the one off where the 2 wires from the mains transformer went, then removed the Yuasa battery – great, I thought.
Went back downstairs, and all the PIRs were still blinking laughingly at me. Back up, took the other fuse out too – same.
Gave up and cut the mains power everywhere – back up and disconnected the mains input to the control unit from the connector block in the attic, powered back up again… silence
