Hello

Can anyone please suggest how I repair this end of a wall? It's the alcove under the stairs that used to be the larder in the kitchen:

A is the 4x2 door frame. B is the door lining with architrave off. I can't remove the block work. I removed a piece of 3x3 timber that formed the missing corner as it was badly warped and not plumb.

Eventually, we want wall tiles to 450mm above worktop height and emulsion on a plaster skim to ceiling.

The easiest solution I can think of would be to add another piece of 3x3 timber but I understand I could have problems with the plaster sticking.

Any suggestions please? Thanks.

You cannot plaster over timber; what depth are those blocks? How do you intend to finish off? Is it to be a door opening or an open area with a return wall?

If your tiling, plaster is not necessarily a good idea as it significantly reduces maximum tile weight which can be a problem if you intend large format tiles.

Thanks for getting back to me Richard.

The blockwork is about 75mm. The alcove is about 700mm wide and 600mm deep. Will put a worktop in with cupboard above.

If you can imagine the blockwork edge brought out flush with the door frame. I want to run a column of 4 inch tiles next to architrave, to below wall unit height (and also above worktop in alcove).

I understand what you say about plastering. Have been toying with idea of packing out with a 2x3 timber and then making good with plasterboard...

The idea of packing out with timber & plasterboard will give rise to cracks where the plasterboard meets the blocks. There are ways of doing, one of which would involve completely covering the wall with a sheet of plasterboard rather than butting up to the blocks. I would remove the timber frame & lining completely, if you’re going to have a conventional plastered/tiled wall it will, again, give you problems with cracking. If that’s a wall inside the cupboard I can see lurking in the shadows, the block work will probably line up with it, all that’s required then is possibly some render repair work, a corner bead & skim.
