How do TV extensions come in so cheap?

HI,

I'm currently going through the building process slowly - and have been wondering how TV extensions are so much cheaper than the quotes we are getting..

how do we know when the quotes are realistic - I'm waiting on structural engineer specs then will be approaching builders..

but I have had a couple of quotes back - there is around 50K difference between the two quotes..

and I feel both are really high..

Any one offer any advice?!

what does that mean ??
why would you want a room for the tv where you cannot watch it ??
i assume it a conservatory that will be very inefficient loosing energy like a sieve and gaining heat when you don't want it
in other words its cheaper because its off lesser quality will last for fewer years and have far higher running costs ??

I assume it means the extensions you see people getting built on lifestyle television programmes.

I don't think they're particularly cheap; it always bugs me when the client says - rather smugly - "Oh, we went £25000 over budget but we're very pleased with the result"

I meant on TV shows - like - 'love it or list it' .. or 'double your house for half the money'..

My MIL has decided that my extension will be about 50K.. I'm assuming the TV programmes have given her this idea..

Its a garage, utility and new living room - 4meters wide by mmmm 15meters long.. ish

i assumed it was a new way to sell a conservatory calling it something else pandering to to peoples often pointless an irrelevant fascinations with material possessions

I'm kinda thinking this is not the ideal way to research an idea of cost. A bit like watching Dr Who to see what space travel is like.

Hmm, still not getting warm. Unless your MIL has recently built several extensions in your area, I would also discard this as a reliable source of information.

In our area £1000 p/m² is the sort of starting point price we would be looking at for the building work. Ostentatious interior finishes and over-elaborate spec's can treble this number. The one we are building at the mo' is coming in at around £1600 p/m.

You are in the London area so you have my sympathies. It may take a dozen or more quotes to even find something vaguely comparable. Recommendations are the best option.

And surely the owners must also be paid by the production company?

I wasn't relying on MIL's ideas.. was just irritated by her .. 'know it all' ..

I've got a couple of quotes coming in - will attempt to get around 5.. maybe more. .


I'm thinking that yes, possibly people lie.. and get paid to do work..
