How is the dirt getting in ?

Hi,
I've been having problems with debris getting into the plate heater exchanger on my Haltead Ace Combi, the result is that the hot water runs hot and cold till the exchanger is cleaned. As a temporary measure a plumber has fitted me a Y strainer to the CH return pipe until the whole system can be cleaned, however, I'm still having problems with what looks like copper oxide getting into the exchanger....anyone have any idea why the strainer isn't doing the job ?

depends how fine the strainer is

it's more than adequate to deal with the size of the pieces i've seen coming out of the DHW exchanger. Is it possible that the dirt could be coming from the primary heat exchanger ?........as far as I can recall this has never been removed and cleaned
