How much petrol does a ride-on mower use?

I got one with the new house and we have a .4/.5 acre lawn/paddock. I don't own a petrol jerry-can and wonder if a 5L one is ample, or I'll be running out constantly. Any ideas?

about 1-2 litres per hour depending on if it's more tractor than mower. I'd get a 10l but any bigger is a pain to carry

Yeah and pouring without spilling. Maybe 2 5Ls might be a perfect option, throw one in the car each time I empty it?

It's a fairly serious one, definitely a proper little tractor with mechanised cuttings belt and so on.

It depends on the HP of the mower engine, but motor biking is spot on with his consumption assessment.
I keep 8 5l cans, but there are other mowers to fuel too.
What machine do you have, for interest?
John :)

I'll have to double check. I know it's 17bhp, quite old and currently stranded in the middle of my lawn because I never thought to check the fuel when I decided to give it a first run ;)

5lt can is OK but have 2 on the go at least.

I have 3 but I also have loads of other petrol kit that I use frequently. The other issue is that many petrol stations don't let you fill up more than 2 at once which means you have to go to 2 petrol stations or just keep them on rotation.
