We lived in a cardboard box.

Sheer luxury; we lived in a manhole.

Seriously, I can still remember the day when a lad brought a 10/- note into class, and everyone crowded round to see it.

Manhole, had it soft lad. We had to live in a rolled up newspaper, work 28 hours a day and pay the boss for the privilege.

Chippies of a certain vintage still call it a 'half crown' when someone marks the wood when driving a nail ( perhaps instead of using a punch )
