how old?

The main types used were I think in order

lead sheath
black sort of rubber
grey stranded no earth (Tinned conductors)
grey stranded with earth
grey solid
whitesolid
then back to grey

Grey was still available throughout since before 1970
White still available now

The grey and white now though as far as I know distinquishes between pvc and lsf
Also VIR singles and white stranded were available plus others proberly
Check the bs number on the bicc cable

To add one to the top of the list the oldest I have seen is wooden troughs ( I_I_I shaped) with lids enclosing cloth covered conductors. Some was still in use in a house my father bought in 1978.
 
My father's lighting circuit was still running on the original cloth covered singles run in conduit until last year, and we think that was the original 1938 wiring (actually in better condition that most of the black rubber I've removed from 50's houses).

Last week, I would say judging by the standard of wiring in a house I have just inspected, recently rewired by our eastern european cousins
