How thin can slate tiles be cut?

Hello DIYers,

I planning a to tile my hearth with riven slate tiles. I'm not too sure how high to make the hearth. The face tiles will probably need to be 30mm x 300mm. I need to know how thin slate tiles can be cut with an angle grinder.

when you say thin, do you mean in width off the end of a tile, or are you meaning the actual thickness of a tile ?

Put simply could I cut slate to say 12 x 20 x 300 from 12 x 300 x 300 squares. Hope that makes sense.

simple answer is yes, just be very very careful and don't press the disc into the slate, cut gently, remember ya slate may well need sealing as well
