I'm trying to build a very simple portable grill but because I'm completely new to DIY I don't know how.

The sort of thing I want to build is seen here

as you can see it's basically some type of metal made into a little box, held up by 4 legs of the same material where you can dump charcoal into it. That's as far as I know

Where's the fun in buying one when you can build your own?

Why not start by looking around scrap (recycling) yards to see what you can scrounge or buy that can be adapted? You may want to buy the grill new as you will probably want to start with a clean one. Have a look at portable barbecues for sale and note the features you like and want to incorporate.

Most home-built barbecues tend to be the non-portable kind of brick or stone. But you don't have to do the same as everybody else.

4 lengths of 1" angle say 40" long
2 x 18 gauge steel sheet 18" x 6"
2 x 18 gague steel sheet 36" x 6"
1 x 18 gague steel sheet 18" x 36"
2 x 1" angle 16" long
2 x 1 " angle 34 " long,
Last bits of angle to use as braces on the underside of the "BOX"

Some pop rivits and a drill + bit to suit, job done. Oh and a angle grinder to cut the slots for the sqewers

That would build the above

As the OP was over 3 years ago, I suspect he’s either made or bought one by now :mrgreen:

The most bizarre is that the resurrector went with;

Very nice Dear i feel angry to see BBQ.I like so much BBQ.Every Sunday i make at my home.

And this is what caused the flurry of recent excitement?

Sleeping dogs, six-shot revolver, etc...
