Hi,

I have an old ceiling rose (pic attached) which as I understand it also has a switched circuit (not sure that's quite the right terminology but hoping you'll understand!).

I want to replace with a pendant light fitting which only has a live and neutral input (pic attached). Do all the wires need to go into these two holes? There doesn't seem much space! Or do i use a chocbox somehow? I put green tape on the red live wire so I know what's what but don't know what to do with the other 3 reds in the middle.

Please advise how to do this? I have managed to wire it but it wouldn't turn off!

Thanks!

Or do I treat the 3 cables in the middle of the ceiling rose as the Earth wires?

NO! YOU COULD BE KILLED!

STOP RIGHT NOW.

Sorry perhaps I worded that wrongly, I don't mean treat them as Earth cables, I just want to understand if that link with the diagrams explains what I should do with those wires? As i see it talking about Earth cables but don't see any Earths on mine. So any explanation would be useful based on the pictures I've provided or those diagrams. Thanks

I've just re looked at the diagram and it's clear now, thanks!

If your wiring has no earth wires you need to ensure the light you are fitting is of class II construction. If it is you will also need to connect it up making sure all single insulated wires are contained inside a suitable insulating enclosure if the fitting is metal. The useless connector supplied with the light will only achieve this if you have one 2 core cable feeding the light and is not suitable four use with the normal UK wiring you have. If the fitting is not marked as class II you will not be permitted to fit it to your wiring.

I don't think I can explain the wiring better than the Wiki guide posted above.

The three reds are Loop IN ( Live from fuse box ) , Loop OUT ( Live to the next ceiling rose ) and the Live supply to the Switch. These three must be connected together in a terminal block which you will have to supply as the fitting hasn't got that necessary 3rd terminal block.

The reason there are no earth wires is this is almost certainly a conduit installation.

Once the ceiling rose is removed, there may be some earth wires behind.

If not, and it IS a conduit system, and it's metal conduit, then the conduit box should provide the earth.
