I have a lot of cracks in plaster in all rooms of the house. Any advice on how best to fill them and smarten the room up without having to redecorate the whole house as I can't afford that.

If you have a lot of cracks (that's what you said) the quickest and best way is to fill the cracks, sand as necessary, spot prime the filler, and re-emulsion the walls completely.
