How to Plaster or Skim and Repair in Tight Spots?

This is above the hob where the electrician wired it up. I used the deep fill plaster. I tried using skim and repair with filling knives but because of the tight area there are ridges or my poor technique. Is it a case of rubbing down the area to get it smooth? The photo is before my attempt. Thanks

Cut wood to shape and stick 120grade sandpaper on with wood glue and sand.
Toupret powder filler is the best stuff imo
