Do not use a neon type screwdriver tester, they can be dangerous and give misleading results. Purchase a two pole voltage indicator/multi meter.
Would you think it reasonable to be attempting this sort of work with no screwdriver, no pliers/wirecutters etc?

Take your neon screwdriver to the nearest Police station. They have a screwdriver amnesty in place at the moment.
