Can anyone tell me the best way to go about securing a cabinet to a stud wall please?

Yes i know but using what without buying a stud finder ?

Either measure along the wall as studs are usually at 400 or 600 centres or use or tap on the wall to find difference in solidity......is it a pure stud wall or brick behind?

Buy a small neodymium magnet and locate the fixings on the plasterboard where it is attached to the studs.That will enable you to identify the centre of the stud and fix accordingly.
