  1. Install the switch in the normal way on a wall.
  2. Operate it several times a day to turn a light on and off, for several years.
  3. When, without warning, the rocker no longer rocks, replace the switch.
  4. Notice while walking downstairs to the bin that the old switch does now click on and off, and that shaking and/or changing the orientation makes the problem come and go.
  5. Notice that when shaking it, a rattle can be heard.
  6. Prise out the switch module from the faceplate, and allow the little broken bit of brass from one of the contacts to fall out.
  7. Replace the module, and confirm that it always works, and there is no more rattling.
  8. Establish whether L1 or L2 is the working side, and make a note on the back of the faceplate with a Sharpie.

Simples.

That's probably fine if (as you imply is the case with byour one) the bit of brass broken off one of the contacts has prevented one 'side' of the switch from working, so that you can use the other 'side' (L1 or L2) as a 1-way switch (and label the switch accordingly). However, if both 'sides' still 'worked', and you therefore didn't know which is the damaged one, you could end up using a very deficient contact. ... and, of course, (if only one side works) depending on whether it is L1 or L2 which 'works', you might have to invert the switch (or module) to get conventional operation.

Kind Regards, John
