We had a little water leak problem the other day and our hallway switch got a bit damp and way smelling of burning. In the panic I took the switch off without taking note of the wiring. I did take a photo but it is not clear enough to identify all the connections.

All is dried out now and I have a new, identical switch but I am struggling with the wiring - particularly the reds.

I did note where the yellow blue and black where and have marked those on the attached image of the new switch.

Left hand switch goes to the hall light, middle is linked to landing (with a switch also up stairs) and the right hand goes to an outside light.

I tried a couple of set ups but ended up with switches effecting other rooms downstairs.

Can someone explain how to work this out?

Thanks

Yes indeed; oh dear. Do you have anything to test with?

Clear photographs of related switches, such as upstairs landing switch may be an advantage too, though we can make educated guesses from the bits and pieces you have told us.

I think it pretty certain that the red which is in the same cable as the blue and yellow goes in the other terminal L of the middle switch.

That should get the landing light working for a start.

It’s probably outside, hall & landing. There’s a red (perm live?) that obviously is looped from one switch to another. but which other is the question.

OP said it is Hall, Landing and Outside.

I just wondered if there were two outside as there seems to be an extra wire.

Thanks for your replies. I decided to enlarge and edit the photos I had taken on my phone. Cleared them up and got the colours brighter. Put them on the computer so they were nice and big And hey presto manged to deduce enough from the various markings, dirt and paint marks to wire it back up and all's OK!!!

Loop out. He also commente he can alter other lights in the house.
It's the T&E thats confusing me.

Unless it's the original method where the com is perm live and picked off the other end into a borrowed neutral.

Well done.

Can we see the picture please?

There is still an extra wire.

Hall light?

With R/B/Y cable ???
Yes I agree there is one too many wires.

I'm assuming the T&E is for one light and equally assumed it's the outside.

Yes I've known old method done with RYB but usually includes neutral but that would have required a connector but OP has indicated where black goes.

I'd missed post #9, well done.

I'd also like to know the final layout please.

OK - these are the pics taken when I was taking it apart on the old switch. I'll add the finished new one tomorrow. I've no idea what I've done or how it works - would be good to understand how it works.
