how would an intruder react?

Hi guys, this is a serious question which I have always wondered. First off I know alarm panels and cables should be hidden from sight in an ideal world however a lot I have come across commercial and domestic are not, my house is no exception sadly, my main panel is currently in the cupboard under the stairs where the fuseboard is and is right next to the back door! The internal sounder is head height above cupboard door right at the back door.

I may relocate panel and cabling but I thought I would ask first If it is worth it.
1. If an intruder breaks into a house professional or amateur and the alarm activates, how will they react? Would they likely just run away or are they likely to look for the panel and destroy it then take their time?
It sounds silly but it begs the question, In my case they will get an earful from the internal sounder but is that likely to scare the intruder off or will he likely smash it off the wall and start looking for the panel?, he would just have to open the cupboard door in my case and there it is. I live in your normal neighborhood, so my house is surrounded but how neighbors will react to the alarm I don't know.

Any opinions and advice will be appreciated, should I move it, or am I worrying over nothing.
What is the most likely scenario?
thanks

If the system is installed correctly with a bellbox fitted with a back up battery , smashing up the control panel will not stop the external bell from ringing !
Unless A...the muppet installer didn't fit the battery or link
B...left the test link on ( depending on bell box ) ....yes I've been to such jobs !

Thanks, I did a bell test a few weeks ago and it was working as expected, I will try self activating it by switching off the panel, hopefully it should sound if not I will change its battery.
cheers

Most burglaries are opportunistic, and if an alarm goes off, they'll leg it - unless you've got some serious valuables that they're after. In that case; they'll drill the alarm box and fill it with foam, then they'll break in and smash the alarm, but that requires they've been round the house first. If the systems a reasonable one, then cutting the wires will set of the alarm, so I wouldn't worry too much.

Nobody takes a blind bit of notice if an alarm goes off round here. They seem to go off regularly and for no apparent reason.

Many will know the response time of police and / or neighbours and will risk spending that time grabbing a few items if those items are visible and easy to take.

There is a reason for some "false" alarms on alarms that use wireless to communicate with the bell box. Some criminals know what it is.
