I Can't Believe It's Not Picture Of The Week

Wow

Have you checked every single other socket and switch in his house, now?

We're working our way around them yes, it's a property he only bought a few weeks ago.

So far we've also found that the cooker control unit is actually connected to the ring final, so that's going to need a new dedicated radial but we're getting into notifiable territory there so we'll have to discuss whether to go down the LABC route or get someone in.

There are a couple of "special spurs" too, that is to say 13A plug into existing socket > flex clipped to skirting > new socket on surface pattress

Goodness!!

At least that one, albeit 'special' is at least essentially relatively safe (at least, no less safe than an extension lead/sockets)!

Kind Regards, John

Relatively yes, although they're done in 0.75mm2 and the layout would suggest that the previous occupants probably used one to supply a tumble dryer.

Ah - you didn't mention the flex size (and I stupidly 'assumed'!). Had you done so, I don't think I would have described it as even 'relatively' safe, even without knowing about the tumble dryer!

Found in a friends kitchen when he asked me if I could fit an extra socket for him. I was just looking for a place to spur from, now I have to do something about this mess.
I agree - painted T&G panelling is dreadful stuff for a kitchen.

Tiles or laminate would be my suggestion. Glass if he can afford it.

Are you lost, B-A-S?

Back there today and I found this 32A?!? radial attached to the original cooker point...

Well, I say attached...

..and yes, the "joint" in the old cooker point was just plastered over.

I especially love the fact that the existing cooker cable goes straight up past both the added sockets, one above and one below the worktop, so they actually went out of the way to bodge it

P.S. BAS, yes the wood panelling has got to go too but that's low priority compared with the wiring and the equally creative plumbing!

It is tacky but as longs as the correct cable is used (1.5mm) then I electrically I don't see too much problem in putting in an extra socket on a plug. I have seen this quite a few times.

The danger is of course overloading the existing socket that supplies it. The wiring to that socket though is very shocking, I just don't know how anybody could think it is ok to leave it in that state.
