If the water level was low, then when you drive it and it gets hot, air will tend to be pushed out of the top of the rad into the expansion bottle. When it cools down it should suck water back in. So if you keep topping up the expansion bottle (remember to include antifreeze) it will tend to expel all air and fill itself with water. But if you are refilling, you can shorten the process by looking for a cap on the top of the rad and filling through there. It should be shown in your owners handbook or workshop manual. You do not normally have to open this cap, only when water level is low and it needs refilling. The usual top up is through the expansion bottle cap.
However, if you have a leak anywhere, not only will it continue to lose water, it will also suck in more air.
If water level was low then either you have been overheating quite badly or you have a leak. Look for damage to the front of the rad e.g. from stones.
Run the engine, stationary, over a clean dry surface and look for any drips or steam.
