Ideal Standard Cistern won't stop running

Hi

After flushing the toilet recently, the water would not stop running into the bowl post-flush. We have never had this problem before and just started happening one day after the toilet had been flushed.

The water does not run as fast a a normal flush but is quite a steady flow and enough to be heard constantly!

The toilet is a modern press button type flush. I have attached a couple of photos to help identify the type of toilet I have. Also, there is a number on the lid of the cistern, E752 and the number E6541 in the cistern itself; I'm not sure how relevant these are.

Any help on how to solve this problem would be greatly received.

First thing to ascertain, Sam is that the fill valve (on the left) actually stops the water entry to the cistern when the float rises......can you gently lift the float by hand to check this?
If the water flow stops, then its a fill valve rather than a flush valve issue here, as the flush valve is automatically allowing water past into the bowl, preventing a flood!

Firstly thanks for your reply.

I tried lifting the float by hand and the water was still running. The small tube to the right of the float in the picture seems to have some sort of plastic bag around it going into the water and the water is flowing out of here into the cistern.

Ok Sam, this means that the fill valve washer has either deteriorated or there's a piece of dirt lodged in there preventing the thing from closing fully.
The polythene pipe allows the valve to fill the cistern quietly and without splashing.
The washer lives below that large round plastic nut on the top of the valve, and the likes of B&Q have spares.
Failing that, a new fill valve is around £10 and fitting is simple enough, if you can isolate the loo water supply.

Hi,
I am looking for advice, I have a similar problem. I am unable to purchase the rubber inlet valve seal as they are no longer available.

I purchased a replacement inlet vale complete, the one I purchased is in the link below which advises its compatible with the E752. Having fitted it it does not stop the water coming in even when manually lifting the valve arm.

Any thoughts or ideas would be great

I'd of just bought a Fluid master one from screwfix with brass thread. Plastic threads can be a problem.
That aside.
Remove the rubber shut off washer and check its in correctly

Sometimes if fitted the wrong way then the water won't shut off. Might have been a problem from factory

Thanks for quick reply, I did check washer and seemed to be fitted ok. JUst would not even slow the flow of water at all.

It is the correct height 237mm and washer was in the top. It seems very strange as you would think it would work being new....

Just that I've had trouble in the past with washers and water pouring out.
I used to film myself taking apart if not a new one with instructions.

Water flowing out with float up means something is wrong with how it is working. All you can do is strip down the parts and put back together following instructions in the hope it fixes .

Yeah.

The connecting thread can be a different length to plastic version. Sometimes. May or may not be a problem.

Thanks it looks like it may be a little longer but I have flexible pipe connector so hopefully should be ok. Fingers crossed it works this time.

Thanks for all your help, Fluidmaster installed and working. Makes me wonder my on earth I bothered trying find a replacement diaphragm!!!!!
