I reckon you really need a retaining wall with some 3 or 4ft panels built in and attached with some kind of brackets.

I do.
We are building a retainer now on the basis of some good feedback.

There was only old coal storage there before which we demolished.

But not forgetting their height is breaching my dpc on the house wall by at least 2 feet.
