Not sure I can be certain of its origin as much as you reassure me I would know.
could it not of dropped off as I pulled up.
Things I have read suggested that the car could function but at reduced braking capacity.
But dont exactly want to be testing it when I am on the motorway doing 70.
guess I pop round to the garage in the morning
And see what they have to say. Fairly sure your right but can’t take the risk!

the brake pads can only escape if there has been some serious dismantling going on, and one caliper would have departed from its mounting.
There would be no braking on one side, and the pedal would hit the floor.

I have seen pads fall out but only when the discs were paper thin and the pads were worn more than halfway through the metal backing plate but unless you were deaf or stupid, you would notice the most terrible grinding when braking for days if not weeks before that happened.
There's a fair bit of material left on that pad, and the rust on the surface could indicate it's lain there for a while.

Someone changed pads and this was left on the road.
Pads don't just fall off, unless the car is in a state that shouldn't be any near a public road.

Go out to your car and pull away at about 5mph. Brake and if it makes loads of grinding noises and the car keeps going the brake pad belongs to you. If it stops as you would normally expect it belongs to someone else.
How are you going to pop round to the garage, in your car so they can check the brakes?
Some people on here do have experience of car maintenance and unless your car is making horrible noises as you try to brake and its having no effect then the brake pad is not yours.

It'll be off the car that's in a hedge about 50 yards further own the road...
As others have said, brake pads don't just "fall out" of their calipers. There's not enough wear on it to have done that, and if it had escaped from a running car as a result of grossly incompetent assembly, whoever was driving would have noticed (and not in a good way!) the very next time they applied the brakes!
