just thought of this - if a gate valve was stuck or the spindle broke for example - you would need to drain the cold water cistern to change it if it were on the cold water to the bathroom, but if it was on the cold feed to the HW cylinder- to turn change it you would need to drain the cistern and still get wet??!!! or would there be another way?

yep was thinking of that. and drain as much hot water from the tap as possible to get a bit more out of the cold feed. but you would still get a bit wet!!!

??? You shouldn't get wet at all! Once the bung is in place (as recommended by superduper), wrap a towel around the pipe just below the valve and crack open the compression fitting to the bottom of the valve. You'll get the amount of water that is in the cold feed pipe from that point up to the tank. Shouldn't be too much, depending on the height of the tank from the valve obviously. In most cases a towel will be enough to soak up the water. Once it has all come through you're free to take off the valve and replace. Remove the bung and that's it, job done.

You're over complicating it. Opening the hot taps ain't gonna make any difference. Just do as above.

what's the difference if the gate valve is belowe the top of the hot water cylinder?? you'll just get more wet surely!!

if the gate valve is below the top of cylinder you will get water come up the pipe when pipe removed from gate valve.
if the gate valve is above the cylinder water won't release from bottom pipe when gate valve removed

oh strange - why is this? is it a science thing?!! SO if it was below the top of the cylinder you would need to drain the whole cylinder to change the gate valve? :(

as the cylinder will try to find a water level with the pipe yes drain the cylinder to just below the gate valve.

yep probs best to drain most of the cylinder to be on the safe side then as you may not know how much you have drained and get wet!! lol!!
