Illuminated Mirrior filling - electrics questions

Just becuase the consumer unit was changed does not mean you had a re-wire.

Looing at your PICs your consumer unit does not comply with wiring regs that were issued in 2008 and probably does not comply the set of wiring regs before that - mainly due to the lack of RCD protection.

Seeing the way the cables have been lashed up leads me to believe that it is an old instlallation and you are well advised to get it tested.

Rewring a house circuit by circuit rather than in one hit would cost a lot more by the you got to the end of the job

ok and thanks for the info...surely that must be the case with loads of properties though in terms of compliance...what does the average person know and what are their responsibilities to comply?

What are are an electrician's responsibilities for that matter?

As it turns out I do have some metal switches (one with a dimmer)
Turn off the power and see if they are earthed. Although even if they appear to be it still needs checking.

and have some metal light fittings too
Don't touch them with the power on.

....the house is around 1900 but must have been 'reasonably recently rewired (at least in part)
Well - at some point in the last 113 years...

...consumer unit looks new enough
It's not unheard of for people to put new CUs on old installations, and do very little else. Sometimes the appearance of a rewire is accomplished by connecting short lengths of new cable to the old, so that when you look at at a CU, or look behind switches and sockets it looks like it was rewired.

(some pics attached)?
Apparently not.

However I do still seee some metal conduit pipes for some wires going to the attic etc
That may have been used for the earths originally, but if it is no longer contiguous it's probably no longer working. And using conduit like that probably dates your installation to more than 50 years old.

You haven't found any cables which are not PVC sleeved, have you? Or any with stranded conductors?

can rewiring be done circuit by circuit?
Yes, but that might be more disruptive than not.

what is the typical sort of cost for a large 4 bed house?
About the same as a family holiday.
