not knowing anythink about these things apart from they work in the dark, can they be bought and wired up to assist a cctv system that has them built in but are not that good [ cheap home use one i bought ] to give it better vision in darkness. regards, r.r.

The little LED ones are used for short range. Like if you are looking at someone outside your front door. If you want to illuminate a large area, like your back garden, I think you want more the kind of thing used in offices and car parks, basically a floodlight but with an IR filter or lamp in it.
In a previous life I used IR goggles in conjunction with a sort of car headlamp with a black plastic filter behind the lens. They gave about as much illumination as an ordinary car headlamp would, seen through the IR gogs.
