I want this fire, but no way can I afford the £5,000.00+

I want a doubled sided/tunnel fire, I have a chimney breast with a chimney, I am not really bothered about the heat it throws out, I want it more for deco, I have made a hole in the chimney breast 2 foot 3 inches from floor, I intend to if I can lay a slate shelf then sit some sort of basket fire on that, would I need any special requirements or is the chimney I got enough ( no other flue) would like to put logs on it rather than coal, also would I need to put some sort of fire brick/slate each side of the fireplace hole, I could also put glass door one side and leave the other open?

Any help would be appreciated
Thx

You'll find its not your average gas fire so fitters used to doing work like this will be few and far between.

What you are describig is specialist work. There are numerous considerations and regulations, including the ralationship of the fireplace openig to the flue size. Commonly, when you see old ones in pubs, the opening is way too high, for example. You can't use a glass "door", but there IS something you can use, but I won't reveal on an open forum. Do you seriously intend doing this yourself. Please don't as you won't get it right.

In any case, your comment about not worrying about heat always baffles me. Not only will you get limited heat, but for decent flame picture, you will need at least a 10Kw input fire, and will therefore need a vent. Everyone else is moaning about their rising bills.

When the fire is off, you are also likely to get a draught down the chimney, or if the heating is on , all the nice radiator heat will go UP the chimney and out.

As for the question of logs or coals, this is dictated by the manufacturer of the fire, but the choice is available.

My business is fireplaces, but we rarely fit inefficient types, and it is inevitable they will be outlawed in the name of the envoironment.

The bottom line is that you HAVE to find a proffesional, and these products don't come cheap. Visit a proper fireplace shop, and you will find you don't need to spend £5K. But be fair, and remember that their "free" advice costs them time and money

ok i thank you for your reply has it now seems i have to save :),

sorry if my post was misleading no i didn't intend to do the work myself i would have course got it fitted by a professional, but i just wanted to know if it could be done, i already have an inset basket gas fire, and being me i couldn't see why it just couldn't (with some new stuff) just be raised up and open both ends  just glad i can stop dreaming about it , and now start to save for it :)

You don't necessarily need to dream of what you want. Just get a gas engineer round to give you a 'quote' and advice.

We are not all that bad - and perhaps we can give you a better option and price!

:)

Hi, Eslaine. as mogridge says, speak to someone, preferably a shop so you can be more sure of experience, and get some idea of what can and can't be done. Tey'll be able to give you at least an initial guide price, and so you will have a reealistic "target". Good luck, and i hope i didn't offend you.
