Can anyone tell me how to identify the ring cable for the lighting circuit in the attic, thereby helping me avoid breaking into a switch cable?

lighting is not done on a ring. problem solved
follow the cables, if it goes down to a switch its a switch cable. seriously what else did you expect? there is no "magical" way of telling what a cable is connected to unless you follow it

Are you talking about a junction box in the loft or a ceiling rose?

but All the cables go into holes. The ones that only have friends at one end are switch cables. The ones that go into holes with friends at both ends are supply cables (unless they belong to the landing light or you have a double switch plate somewhere).
