deeb - a bit more info please; ground floor or upper floor, solid floor (concrete) or suspended timber, joist direction. Or are you thinking of just laying a slab (something like slate maybe) over floor? Also, will you be using the fireplace for a 'real' fire or just a decorative jobby.
