I have a one-gang one-way light switch that controls my hall ceiling light. Can i replace it with a 2-gang switch with the second switch operating a wall light? What would the wiring be?

If it has neutral you can you'd have to have a look inside, post a picture if you aren't sure

Surely any cable to a wall light would run down from the ceiling, so once under the floor upstairs a neutral should be to hand?

Apologies for the lengthy delay. I posted this on behalf of my son and have only just got the wiring photo. It turns out the switch is actually a 2-way one. What can I do to take a feed from this and control a new wall mounted light?

I expect this is a solution but I do have to mention that sometimes things are not what they seem.
I see 3 T&E cables - is that correct?
It looks like top 2 T&Es are loop in and loop out. (permanent live and neutral)
And bottom T&E is strappers to the other switch (?upstairs?)

What I have done here is copy the existing switch and paste it beside the existing to create a 2gang

Add the new T&E.

You're correct about the 3 T&E. The second switch is at the other end of the hallway. So I simply replace this switch with a 2-gang and wire as you've shown, with the other end of the new T&E running to the new wall mounted lamp. Correct?

Yes I believe that is the situation.
