Hi,

I've had a search on the forums to see if this has been posted recently and couldn't find anything but I'm wanting to install two new wall lights in the bedroom. There isn't anything there at present and they will not be close to any sockets from the ring main.

Is it acceptable under recent regulations for me to break into the live lighting circuit in the loft with a junction box (i.e. avoiding the switched live wire) and then with another junction box, send two wires down the wall to my new wall lights? The lights would have their own switches obviously but by doing it this way, it wouldn't be possible to control them via a switch or whatever - i.e. the only way to isolate them would be switch of the power at the mains.

cheers for the advice!
James.

Do you mean that each light would have a permanent supply, and the light would be controlled by a switch built into each light fitting?
If so, then what is proposed could work.

Any junction boxes would need to remain accessible. The cables in the wall would need to be protected by a 30mA RCD, or be of a type which does not need this.

You probably don't need any extra junction boxes - just connect the cables for the new lights into the ceiling rose or whatever lights you already have in the ceiling, making sure to connect to the unswitched live rather than the switched one.
