Hi, I’m installing a 4m 152*152 23 rsj in a double skinned internal wall with no cavity. Both sides internal as it used to separate the garage. This is a bungalow so only has a triangle of brick above it which supports purlin.

Because of existing lintel when I put the padstones in the steel will nearly be touching the bricks above. Although I will be able to get some slate in it’s not leaving a lot of room for packing. I will be adding some mortar to top of rsj when installing.

I’ve already contacted my SE who has reduced the padstone depth allowing me to slice 10mm to get the steel in so it feels like I’m out of manageable alternatives and I need to get it in this weekend

Will BCO be happy?

as far as I know, as long as you get the calculations from the SE, the BCO will be happy. I'm not sure exactly which part you think the BCO might pull you up on though.

Sorry the post was a tad long. My concern is there won’t be enough bed to pack between top of steel and existing brickwork above. I seem to recall somebody saying there is a minimum.

I'm not a builder but I don't think improper packing is a regs issue more of workmanship as it's more likely to crack as it settles.
Anyway, with mortar, the less the better as it shrinks slightly as it dries out and sets.

There is no minimum. As long as the wall is either on the beam, or packed with mortar or slate or suchlike then it is fine. Whatever works.
