Hello, today I've seen some patches on plasterboards and it was getting wet without any leakage. Upon further investigation, condensation on steel beems were seen.. before plastering it over, please can someone recommend what it needs to be done? (Appreciate if you can give me a name or link to...
Hi All,
New to the forum so apologies if that has been covered in an earlier post, but I couldn’t find anything!
I have a 2 storey Victorian built house and I’m looking to move the doorway to our lounge more towards the centre of the room. But my problem is, there is an RSJ around 3.4m long...
We've been having a Dorma loft conversion done, the build included the need for 5 RSJ's.
One of the main issues we had been facing was freshly plastered ceilings cracking on the 1st floor, which effectively were directly below 3 of the 5 RSJ's.
I decided to rip the ceilings down, I found that...
Hi all, hoping someone can help with some concern I have with a wall in our flat roof garage.
There are cracks in the brickwork where the previous owner looks to have drilled some holes. The issue is there is the door frame and RSJ above which looks like it could collapse.
Trying to understand...
Looking for some input (help) guys.
Padstone is 80mm in depth. RSJ has been installed to sit on the concrete pad and bricked in on the inner leaf of the cavity wall.
RSJ - 2 * 203 x 133 UB
RSJ open span - 4.3m
Note: also has a point load from additional beam in centre (additional beam 2.2m)...
Hi,
New here.
Need some advice on a project I’m working on. Iv had a 5meter RSJ put in across the back of my house. I have some bifolds ready to go in for now but In 6-8 months time I am having an extension. When I do the bifolds will move to the new extension.
The problem is the RSJ...
Universal Beam 1.8m length 1.46 opening in single leaf wall. Supporting walls are 350mm and 400mm wide.
SE has specified 3 courses of blue bricks rather than a padstone.
Do I get the brickie to lay the 3 courses in normal brick pattern, or are they stacked one on top of the other? Given...
Hi, we're doing up a stone house, and have lots of vapour-related potential problems. Today's problem: we have an RSJ across a room, both ends in external stone walls, supporting the first floor joists. We're installing internal insulation (stud etc.) on all external walls, so the RSJ is a cold...
I have the spec of my padstones from my SE - but he has gone AWOL and I am unable to clarify with him what exactly he means.
This is a single RSJ, with top plate, that will be supporting an old, standard brick cavity wall (approx. 300mm wide).
The structural calcs refer to "Padstone 1 & 2" -...
Guys,
Any advice..
SE specified bolts and spacers necessary. Builder has added bolts but not spacers. The work is up and he is saying spacers are not needed and is pushing back (basically refusing) on making changes now.
The beams sit right next to each other - no space in between - is it...

Hi,
I am taking a corner out of the kitchen on the ground floor which will be supported by a 'T' RSJ section. The largest RSJ (203 x 203 x52) has a span of 5m. One end will be on the original 9inch brick pier and the other will be on a new 300mm wall (inner leaf - 100mm).
The builder has built...
Guys,
I have a builder in doing some work for me. He put up an RSJ where there was previously a load bearing wall. Can you comment on the photos? I'm not 100% confident in what's been done.
New RSJ spans 5 metres and also supports smaller pre-existing RSJ.
Areas of concern,
- Pad stone 80mm...
Hello, sorry if this isn’t the right place, it’s my first time posting. I have a couple of question, both things I’m a little uneasy about. I have a builder working on a loft conversion and it has a large steal going across the ridge, my concern is it looks like that steal is only supported on...
Hi,
I am a new member here, in the process of buying a 3 bed 2 storey 1970's house and have noticed cracking in the masonry where the rear (single storey) extension meets the building. The cracks are stepped and go through both the bricks and the mortar. The extension itself is around 15 years...
Hi everyone, sorry for the second post in one day.
I am currently looking to install an RSJ and steel column in my house in place of a load bearing wall.
My question is in regards to how structural engineers normally model the connections.
See diagram below:

Hi,
I'm planning to utilise my basement space (previously a garage) however I'm in need of creating some additional ceiling height - especially where currently positioned there is an RSJ.
In summary, I want to remove it, and replace with wood in a similar arrangement to the rest of the house...
Hi all, im new to this site so bare with me.. im about to renovate a 1920/30’s semi-detached property, its a big job for me alone, it needs everything, from new concrete ground floors, new joists to 1st & 2nd floor, also partially new roof for a loft conversion.. ive already done the house next...
Hi,
3 years ago we had a 2 storey side / single storey rear extension added to our semi-detached house. This involved the removal of the "old" rear wall with RSJ installation.
Since it was done we've had vertical cracks near the "join" in the rear extension, not deep not wide but definitely...
