I have recently moved into a new build and I am fitting uplighters. I have removed the original light fitting and now I am just left with 2 cables coming out the wall. The trouble is the cable isnt quite long enough.

I only need 1 of the cables, so can I put insulation tape on the uneeded live and neutral, then put the 2 earth in a 15a terminal box. (Earth isnt required as light is ceramic)

Then to make the live and neutral on the other cable longer, can I just use 15a terminal blocks?

Will the wires be Live and Neutral after disconnection?

Do/did they go to another light?

Both cables just went into 1 light. You have made me think now, to put both lives in the same block and both neutrals in the same block? Is this right? Then the 2 earths in the same block.

Is one cable the supply and the other a switch wire? How were they wired to the old light? You did note it didn't you?

Yes, but it depends what the cables were for before.
Is that how they were connected?

Is there a wall switch which operates the light?
Is there another light?

Yes, there is another light on the same switch at the other side of the room. Yes I took a picture before removing the old install, it had a terminal block with both live, and a block with both neutral. I think you have both prompted me to answer my own question! Thanks.

Will get a more suitable terminal block for my light tomorrow, put both live in a block, both neutral in a block and both earth in a block. Then extend the live and neutral.

If you put the two black (or blue) wires (which may not be neutral) in one block you could find on switch on the MCB/fuse goes. Have a close look at your picture.
