When building floors, why don't more people lay a concrete slab, then, say, 100mm of PIR insulation, then a chipboard floor? It seems to be that it would result in a warmer feeling room - less thermal mass anyway?

Thanks

Gary

They do, most new build houses have concrete ground floors. But you wouldn't normally have a chipboard finish. Much easier to get a level durable finish with a screed.

New builds often do have chipboard on insulation boards, but its usually polystryrene which is (slightly) more durable than PIR. But the result is disastrous a few years down the line - creaking like mad, sagging in doorways etc. Its done for speed and cost. Usually the owner pays out to have a proper solid floor fitted in the end !
Simon.

Why the feck would anybody want lousy chipboard when they can conceal the insulation below the slab and have a screeded floor that will receive just about any floor covering.

Chipboard should be outlawed.
