I'm going to pull the tiles from this lower roof, given that the gauge looks off, I reckon I'll end up having to re-batten. Having had a quick look during a ceiling repair I found out this space isn't insulated at all. Would insulating this space be the same/similar to insulating a loft? I was thinking of laying up to 170mm of loft roll between the ceiling joists (but not over the eaves) before getting on with the rest of the roof. Does this make sense?

Put as much as you like in there, min 300mm - between and over joists, don't worry about the eaves. Make sure you use a breather membrane, not felt.
